Beware of scams impersonating WAX

Apr. 16, 2018

Lately we’ve seen a wave of social media accounts and websites that are impersonating the Worldwide Asset eXchange™. The message is usually that if you send ETH to an address, you will receive free WAX or ETH in return. We have no such program, and anything like this is a scam.

We are actively working to report and remove these scam accounts and websites, and so far we are unaware of anyone in the WAX community participating in the scam, but we’d like to take this opportunity to highlight ways to keep your cryptocurrency safe from scams such as these:

1. Our only official website is https://wax.io/ — any other website claiming to be WAX is a scam.
2. Our official social media accounts are:

Twitter

Telegram

Telegram Announcements

Medium

Facebook

YouTube

Reddit

3. WAX will never ask you for your private key or account passwords.

4. WAX will never ask you for your personal information outside of our official support system ([email protected] or in some cases the OPSkins support desk).

5. We have not issued any information regarding the airdrop for the protocol token. This information will not be available until the end of 2018, and will be shared only from our official social media channels or website (listed above).

6. If you have any questions, our support staff and social media admins are available to assist you. You can reach our support staff at [email protected] and our admins in Telegram (identified by the word admin next to their name).

Here’s an example of a recent scam targeting the WAX community:

As you can see, the real WAX account is twitter.com/wax_io which posted the original tweet. As a reply to the tweet, a scam account, twitter.com/waxy_nio, impersonated our branding and posted about a free ETH scam.

This scam attempt is very common in the crypto space. In fact Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, has changed his twitter name to: ‘Vitalik “Not giving away ETH” Buterin’ because of the number of scam accounts impersonating his profile to trick customers into sending ETH to a scam address.

At least one website has gone up impersonating our company as well, claiming to give a free airdrop. Remember — if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. This is the scam website:

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us through our support system or message our admins on Telegram, and we encourage you to report any known scams to us so that we can report and remove them.
